Your chosen accommodation in Cape Town is looking slightly run down. That rug that’s been gathering dust in your living room can be thrown out. Food items that were once comfortable in your fridge are now fighting for space, literally being pushed out and squashed as you cram more groceries in, it’s time for a new fridge no? With Christmas rapidly approaching, the spending bug bites us all and the urge to replace the old with the new is a hard one to resist. The shopping malls of Cape Town are massive repositories for every possible product known to man. If you hunger for a gold plated flying-duck collection, you will find it. If you need a floating wicker chair, you will find it. Whatever it is, whatever you want, the malls have it for you.

Cape Town has an amazing collection of shopping malls, which caters for literally every taste. The largest shopping centres are strategically placed, giving each sector of Cape Town easy access to its many wonders. From the V&A Waterfront near the ocean to Willowbridge, situated in the heart of Durbanville, there is something for everyone (as the old adage goes).

The V&A Waterfront became Cape Town’s largest best tourist attraction almost by default. This massive mall is located between Sea Point and Green Point and is literally surrounded by the ocean. Built around the skeleton of a working harbour, the V&A [Victoria and Alfred] has a distinctive charm of its own, with a myriad of coffee shops and boutique stores tempting tourist and locals alike. Never mind the exceptional entertainment options on hand. There is a world-class movie house, boating trips, a five-star hotel connected to the mall and boundless other options. An open-air auditorium hosts colourful jazz-bands on most days, which you can listen to as you relax after a hearty meal at any one of the Waterfront’s excellent restaurants. On a personal note, the Waterfront was the first shopping mall I was ever introduced to and remains a firm favourite over the others that populate Cape Town.

For the southern-suburb dwellers, the green and wealthy area of Claremont is the perfect location for the rejuvenated Cavendish Square. Once a single shopping mall, Cavendish has now attached itself to The Link shopping centre and has become a shopper’s paradise with a wealth of shopping possibilities. Sixteen cinemas let you unwind with a cool movie after a long day of bag-carrying. Over nineteen restaurants, catering for all tastes, allow you to fill your belly and keep the kids happy with ice-creams from Ole, McDonalds or the family-friendly Wimpy. The Square houses a massive Woolworths that suits the distinct, polished charm of the rest of the centre and is so large that it can almost be considered a mini-mall within a mall. The only blemishes on this shining example of consumerism are the petty thefts that occur in and around the mall. Cavendish is very close to an unsavoury part of Claremont and unfortunately suffers considerably because of this. Security has been stepped up though and these minor problems should soon be a thing of the past. I still miss my dear scooter helmet though.

Every inch of Cape Town is indeed covered and in the crossways of the Western Cape lays Canal Walk, the largest shopping mall in South Africa. Over twelve years of construction has culminated in a suburb-spanning beast that houses a gym, a full theme-park, a lake, a go-kart racing track and of course, close to 1000 stores to shop at. Every single desire you wish to fill can be satisfied at Canal Walk, from elite boutique stores to retail giants. When I think about all the delicious food options in the heart of the mall my mouth begins to water and I yearn for a visit to the excellent Nando’s, Spur and other fast-food outlets that pepper the long walk of this super-shopping mall. For the enquiring minds there is the MTN science centre which holds many world-class, interactive displays for children and adults alike to learn about, and interact with, scientific wonders. This is the type of shopping centre you need an entire day to walk through, so plan well, take a snack along and enjoy maxing out your credit card.

These are my top three shopping malls in Cape Town. There plenty of other minor ones such as Willowbridge in Durbanville, Blue Route on the way to Muizenberg and The Paddocks in Milnerton. Whichever shopping mall you choose to enjoy your Cape Town activities in, make sure to have a blast and spend only what you can afford.

I have been considering some hotels in Cape Town, South Africa and came across some interesting websites focusing on Cape Town activities.
