The Independent is one of the four major British quality newspapers. Its headquarters is in Canary Wharf, London.
The Independent was first published in 1986 and is one of the youngest British national daily newspapers. It has a circulation of 253,737 copies (as of November 2006) and has a readership decline of 3.69% compared to same month of the preceding year. The Independent on Sunday follows this trend, last year lost 5.65% of the readers and last had a print run of 212,892 copies (as of November 2006). The reader is wasting the general trend among British newspapers. The weekday edition of the Independent was launched in 2004 with the British Press Award as a National Newspaper of the Year. The Independent is the publication of Independent News & Media.

The Independent is the youngest British broadsheet newspaper (also called "Compact"). The first edition was published on 7 October 1986. The newspaper is no longer in broadsheet format. The founders were Andreas Whittam Smith, Stephen Glover and Matthew Symonds, three former editors of the Daily Telegraph, the differences with them according to William Michael Berry (Baron Hartwell) had left and now with their own company Newspaper Publishing Ltd.. a new beginning dared. Marcus Sieff was the chairman of Newspaper Publishing, Smith's chief editor of the Journal.

The Independent also supported the Product Red campaign of U2 front man Bono. For this project, an edition called The (RED) Independent, a special edition, in which half the daily income in aid projects to be invested. The first one from Bono as chief editor produced copy was published in May 2006 and sold very well. In September 2006 there was a further issue of the RED Independent, this time for the fashion designer Giorgio Armani was responsible.
