Arguably the most influential comic book of my generation was Watchmen. This 12 issue comic book gained immediate respect upon its initial run, and when DC published the series in a graphic novel the world created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons gain a an even bigger following.

This is a book that made these characters and the world they inhabit that of legend in the comic book and pop culture world. "The Watchmen" was considered the first comic book with real adult themes that many comic book creators have credited for influencing their future work.

The story takes place in 1985 where weird things are taking place, for instance Richard Nixon is still President , and a law has been passed that bans all masked superhero/ vigilante efforts to fight crime. When one of the "Watchmen's" own a hero known as "The Comedian" is murdered, a former colleague Rorschach , is suspicious that someone out there is targeting costumed heroes. He goes to other members of the Watchmen, Nite Owl, Spectre, Ozmandias, and the mysterious Dr. Manhattan to alert them of the Comedians death and warning they could be next.

Also world destruction looms as the United States and the Soviet Union are sitting on the brink of nuclear war that will destroy the world.

"Watchmen" pays great homage to the book by staying remarkably accurate to the creator's vision. It's taken many years to bring Watchmen to the big screen and it was worth the wait because the movie should satisfy the rabid, widespread fan base of this sacred comic book novel.

I also liked the feel of the movie, and how I got lost in the watching it much as I did when I first read the book. It's dark, dirty, violent, exciting, and thought provoking once again much like the novel. The Watchmen are flawed heroes with painful backgrounds, and uncertain futures it's not cut and dry perfect but a world where the fine line of good and evil have never been closer.

Director Zach Snyder the mind behind the great "300" surpasses that effort with this gutsy undertaking and knocks it out of the yard. Yes there are moments left out of the film and some added that will leave the movie open to some criticism. With a running time of 2 hrs and 45 minutes Watchmen doesn't waste a minute of screen time mostly due to the great detail of the book.

The film moves at a deliberate pace with Snyder doing his best to bring as much of the book as he can in the time given. To be honest I want those edited minutes back because I didn't want the movie to end and it left me wanting more. I will just wait because there are reportedly nearly one hour of deleted scenes will be a part of the Blu-Ray release.

The effects are first rate, the fight scenes are exciting and brutal and the look of the film is at times jaw dropping. Zac Snyder should be commended for brilliantly bringing the Watchmen to life. This is the first great film of 2009 and one that shouldn't be missed!
