In the past anyone who could read and write may be a Lawyers clerk if they find employment in a law firm. But today the situation has drastically altered to a point where you must be well educated in law and Paralegal studies to be able to successfully carry out your duties as a Paralegal. The entry level of a Paralegal is a bachelor degree.
I worked as a Paralegal for a substantial part of my life. It is unknown to me that a lot of aspiring people jump into the Profession without adequate knowledge of what is really expected of them and the scope of Paralegal duties. This is why this article aims to educate you as to what you should expect as duties when you eventually graduate from your Paralegal training and find a Paralegal employment:
A guy may find a general duty paralegal employment in a law firm or a specialized paralegal job in Government and NGO offices as well as in law firms. In the law firms a Paralegal is usually assigned the job of colleting and indexing legal papers, writing legal documentations, counseling and taking depositions from witness before hearing in court and generally manage a law firm if he is the only Paralegal or the head of a group of Paralegals.
Your job as a Paralegal working in the Legal department of a Government office or in a None Governmental organization among others will include attending to people on legal matters and generally assisting them with the discharge of their legal problems in the department. Most organizations employ a Paralegal instead of a lawyer in order to minimize expenses, so you will be expected to be well trained to handle most legal issues that are applicable to the organization.
It is therefore true that every aspect of human calling, today, requires the services of a Paralegal to help attend to the needs of the public who have some legal issues to contend with in the organization. For instance an Insurance Paralegal would have been thoroughly trained in Insurance laws to be able to manage or assist an attorney in handling the legal department in an Insurance firm.
The major challenge of the Paralegal career is the mountain of work that must be done. For this reason Paralegals are most like to do over time on a continuous basis. This is where a Paralegal passes the acid test or falls by the way side. Though for some Paralegals the overtime pay has been enough motivation to carry on with the challenges. A hard working Paralegal's basic pay plus the overtime pay turns into above average take home pay in the United States.
To conclude this Paralegal career information, I want you to note that Paralegals are no more seen as Lawyer's clerks as was the case in the past. Today the Entry level for Paralegal career is a Bachelor Degree. Respect for the profession and Paralegals has greatly improved, because Paralegals now come well trained and are much more while handling productive higher responsibilities in law firms and the legal departments of organizations.
