Becoming a surgeon may be a dream you have for your future. In order to achieve it though you will need to plan for it now. It takes eight years of college to complete all of the required education to become a surgeon. That is a very long time so you must be dedicated to making it happen. Four of those years will be specifically at a medical school. Then you must apply for an internship. This is where you will work with other surgeons on the job to learn more about what it is about. Once you have successfully completed the internship you can move on to the residency. That will generally last for about four years. It is important to know where you would like to be a practicing surgeon at before you accept an internship or residency. That is because the requirements for completing them vary by state. You don't want to realize later on you have to do more because where you completed such activities didn't meet those same requirements.
The length of the residency you will have to perform also depends on the location. At the same time it is going to depend on what type of surgery you would like to complete. Those that have to do with the brain will require much more training than those that are for basic medical procedures. Many individuals that want to learn how to become a surgeon join a branch of the military to do so. They find they get money to pay for their education and training which relieves a huge burden. They also get accelerated programs so it can be completed in less time. However, you also have to serve out your obligations to the military when you take such a program.
At the minimum then it is going to take you 11 years of school and training to become a surgeon. That is to ensure you have the knowledge you need to succeed on the job.
