Once completing an initial screening stage, the best candidates are invited to attend the assessment centre, where they will be monitored in their ability to complete tasks and their skills will be assessed. The most significant aspect is how a candidate performs in relation to their rival candidates.

Psychometric testing

Psychometric tests require the candidate to answer many multi-choice questions and aims to highlight basic personality traits. They are used by the employer to create an idea of the behavioural patterns of a candidate, and to predict how they would behave in certain situations. The information produced by the tests will then be used in an interview.

The most important thing for a candidate completing a psychometric test is to remember that there are no right or wrong answers. However, the candidate must answer as honestly as possible, not answer how they think the recruiter wants them to answer. Honest answers are essential to produce a true reflection of a candidate’s personality and behavioural skills.

Verbal and numerical reasoning

A candidate’s ability to use language and words is tested by verbal reasoning, whereas their ability with numbers is tested by numerical reasoning. Generally, people excel at one more than the other. Performance is crucial here, as recruiters often compare their candidates to what is expected. These tests also highlight how candidates work out problems differently.

Candidates should answer verbal and numerical reasoning questions as quickly as possible. Questions should not be rushed, and must be read carefully, however taking too long could cause a candidate to come more confused and stoop them from completing the tests..

Presentation

Employers vary rarely inform candidates in the graduate recruitment process of the topic covered before they arrive at the assessment centre. They will then typically have a very short time to prepare. Therefore, no recruiter expects highly structured content from a candidate. Instead, importance is placed on hop you present yourself and your prepared content. Clear dictation is essential, as are specified objectives and the invitation of questions by the candidate. Sticking to the allocated time is also important.

Group exercise

Candidates in the graduate recruitment process have often never been interviewed before and don’t know the etiquette needed for success. Many candidates believe that being the most dominant and loudest group member results in being remembered and therefore, employed. However, in reality, it is those that allow other people to speak and acknowledge their contribution, who are remembered.

Panel interview

Panels in the graduate recruitment process often consist of 4 or 5 members. Candidates must remember that even if the panel is dominated by one or two members, it is the whole group that will make the final decision. Therefore each panel member must be addressed equally.

The most important aspect of an assessment centre during the graduate recruitment process is to establish the skills, personality traits and behavioural patterns of a candidate. Candidates should take their time, be confident and remember that they are always being watched.

Good luck
