Topiary Plants

The topiary field is an example of horticultural artwork: topiary plants are trimmed and shaped into specialized figures and designs. Most often the plants used for topiary purposes are extremely dense. Animals such as rabbits, elephants, and bears, mythical gods and heroes, intricate patterns and designs, and huge mazes have all been incorporated into topiary artworks. Though real topiaries are often enormous in scale, there are many, many designs available with smaller silk plants. Silk topiaries are most often found in offices or churches. A very popular look for silk topiaries includes a spiral shape, because it can be very small but decorative.

To Buy or to Rearrange? That is the Question

Every time I find myself in a craft store poring over the new selections, I begin again to think that if only I had this item or that decorative craft, then my house would look perfect. This mode of thought not only leaves me constantly wanting for the next available item but also leaves my wallet empty. In all reality, that new exciting purchase may be the first thing I add to my next garage sale list. I have been surprised to discover that rearranging my furniture and decorations is often more satisfying—and flattering—than adding something new. Sometimes I do something drastic (rearrange an entire room), and sometimes the change is more subtle (swapping this picture for that painting), but it still gives me the feeling of having a nice change in the house. Not does this expand my talents, but it helps to keep my wallet fat!

The Power of a Couple Minutes

You do not have to spend countless hours to have a beautiful-looking home. Many ideas you can use to enhance your home only take a couple moments, if done on a consistent basis. First, find a place to record your ideas about things you would like to change or decorations you want to use. When you have enough time to do some decorating, this journal will be a gold mine for you. Do one smaller thing every day that will not have to be done again for a long time (for example, organizing a drawer in the kitchen or cleaning the corners of the ceiling). By taking a few extra minutes a day for this, you can keep your home looking great. You can also take a few minutes each day to learn new home decorating techniques. Use the Internet or some magazines, and see if something catches your eye. A gorgeous, efficient, and pleasant home is within reach—and all it takes is a small amount of extra time each day.

Plants as Interior Décor

As you begin to decorate your house with greenery, first decide on the size of the plants you plan to add. 24-36 inches is the perfect height for plants that will be placed on tabletops. Because these plants are meant to be noticed, choose ones with larger, less delicate leaves. On the other hand, decorating for a corner will require more vertical movement and longer leaves to make it “pop” more for the viewer. The more you plan ahead and experiment with different options, the happier you will be with the final result. Keep in mind that artificial plants have an advantage over their real-life counterparts in that you do not have to constantly water them, they do not attract bugs, and they last about three times longer.
